It's Fall and some things to consider

Postby farrunner on Tue Oct 07, 2008 8:59 am

Fall is upon us and I thought it might be good to note some things that come with fall that may not be on your mind.

1. Fall is where the bears are very active trying to store up for the winter hibernation. There are a number of spots along the SF Trail where there are berry and acorn bushes. These are popular with the bears. I have noticed bear scat on the trails in previous years tho I have not noticed anything as yet but be alert... This is also true of any remote trail that you might be on especially in the foothills.

2. Fall is also hunting time. Be alert for hunters and wear bright orange vest if you are in any area where there may be hunting allowed. The Trail Nerds in Kansas have encountered bow hunters in some of the area where they run and I thought it prudent to bring this alert to Colorado Springs.

3. Darkness comes earlier. If you plan to run in the evening, it would be prudent to carry a flashlight or headlamp even if you do not plan to be out that long...things happen that might cause you to be delayed. A small flashlight is not that heavy and it might be very useful.
