Leadville Marathon training

Postby scott on Thu Apr 09, 2009 7:10 am

Hey all. I'm contemplating the Leadville Marathon (26.2 ...not the 100.) I'd like to find some trails that are close to the terrain and steepness. I figure Co. Springs/Manitou area is my best option as I live just south of Denver right off I-25.

Anyone have any trails they could suggest that have some good climbs (besides Barr)?

Thanks.

Hi Scott,

Was just thinking about you so I came over to the forum and saw that you have posted this earlier this month. I am not familiar with the current course for the Leadville Marathon, the last time I ran it, the course was a lop of Turquoise Lake. I think Jerry was there last year or the year before, I will ping him about it.

He and I could give you lots of data about the 100 miler as we have both been there..you might want to think about that one. My daughter is going to give it a shot this year. She just finished the Rocky Raccoon 100 last month and now want to take on something with more challenge (not that RR is not a challenge, but 10000ft and hope pass...). Her problem will be coming from sea level. She is no longer a mountain lady. Last year at the Wild West Relay, she suffered big time on Rabit Ears Pass.

I do know that mosquito pass is no picnic but I did not see a course map on the website. The topo of the course does not look like there is anything super steep. Check out this link: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://tr ... ues=180309 Not sure if this is the course but it is reported to be.

Leadville Marathon Training

Postby coloradorunner on Tue Jun 16, 2009 7:18 am

Hi Scott,

The marathon course is run on a combination of 4WD dirt mining roads and some sweet single track that goes around Ball Mountain. There are some steep sections on the north side of Ball that will have you grabbing your waist, but beyond that it's just a mere grind.

The best trails that I can think of around the Springs is the Ute Pass Trail connecting to Longs Ranch Road, either looping back to Manitou on the Barr through the Experimental Forest or just coming back down Longs Ranch Road. That road is almost exactly like what you're going to find at the Leadville Marathon.

Bob says that you need to get out to the Falcon Trail too as the wild flowers are perfect - I was just there yesterday (6/15)

Good luck!
Jerry
